Abdominoplasty Baton Rouge
While eating right and exercising daily are important and are the keys to living a healthy lifestyle, they
are not always the most effective options for improving the appearance of your abdomen.
Some people may find that they still have a noticeable pooch on their stomach after months of dieting and exercise. Others may have loose excess abdominal skin and stretched-out abdominal muscles that
make it impossible to have a tight and toned tummy.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Cox has encountered countless patients looking for a way to improve the appearance of their stomach. Time and time again, abdominoplasty has proven to be the
best choice for helping these patients.
Dr. Cox performs a significant volume of abdominoplasty procedures, making it one of our most common surgical procedures. Decades of experience have led to refinements in procedures and techniques that allow for a very high level of satisfaction throughout.

A Breakdown of the Abdominoplasty Procedure
The Abdominoplasty procedure involves several key aspects. At the start, a single incision is made from one hipbone to the other. This incision allows Dr. Cox access to the underlying tissues. In many cases, another incision is also made around the bellybutton to allow for changes higher up on the abdomen.
Through the incisions, Dr. Cox is able to remove unwanted loose skin from the abdomen. Next, the stretched and loosed muscles in the underlying abdominal wall are rejoined and tightened with the aid
of internal sutures.
Liposuction is coomonly used in conjunction with abdominoplasty as a way to improve the contours of the upper abdomen and love handle areas through the removal of excess fat in the area. Once contouring is complete, the skin is redraped and the incisions are carefully closed with medical stitches. The end result is substantial and often dramatic improvements in abdominal contours.
Abdominoplasty requires general anesthesia and is most often performed in our office operative facility, Cumberland Surgical Center. Procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and operative time is usually about two hours.
Recovery following abdominoplasty is manageable. Some temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort are to be expected. Exparel is used to minimize a majority of the discomfort during the initial phase of the recovery period. A majority of swelling and discomfort should subside and most patients are able to return to non-strenuous work activities within two weeks, some less. The exact amount of recovery time required will depend on the body’s natural healing process.
